Tom Cruise dropped out of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. to put all his focus on M:I 5.

Good news for M:I 5 but I was looking forward to the Ritchie/Cruise team up. Oh well.

Of course it has, because Hollywood can make a movie with an interesting or unique title.

Edge Of TOMorrow:

Saw this in theaters last Thursday. The day after seeing X-Men DOFP, which I quite enjoyed. The only review I'd read had said it was superior to that film. So with a relief in my heart that most likely this film wasn't going to suck I went and saw it and it was in fact not only better, it was way, way better.
Edge Of Tomorrow is very much Groundhog Day reimagined as an action film but it puts this concept to the best possible use. Without wanting to spoil much the way the characters, both Tom's and Emily Blunt's (who's a totally hot, strong, badass kicker of ass), react and work with the whole situation is realistic and engaging and the second act is one of the most heartwrenching and best ever in any action film. The alien bad guys in the film are there to provide tension (and boy there are scenes that rival horror films tension wise) and to move the plot and characters along all the while remaining interesting, threatening and fearful baddies.
I'm sort of out of ways to say praise to this film because it was a film that worked on so many levels in such great ways it just has to be seen.

9/10. (Rewatches will probably put this in my top 5 favourite Tom Cruise movies).

I'm probably going to see that at the weekend, glad to hear it's a good one.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation:
Took me a while to find the time to get this up since I saw it opening night last Thursday. But not for a lack of quality on the films' part. It's everything we've come to expect from a M:I movie. The action is fantastic. Rebecca Ferguson is jaw droppingly gorgeous and amazingly asskicking. (She sort of steals the show away from Tommy boy). Tom Cruise is up to his old stunts. Renner actually gets some interesting stuff to do plot wise this time. The plot never over explains itself and the movie is very peculiar about what it decides to show the audience, this combined with it's double crosses, triplecrosses and fake crosses makes the film a blast to watch.
It's not the best in the series but it delivers the goods.

8/10.

Rewatched War Of The Worlds after reading the novel and watching the '50s film.

It's a lot better than how I remembered it. Tom's arc is executed well and interesting. Spielberg's directing is superb with the smaller scenes and the bigger ones. With breathtaking camera work. (I know now loving it in theatres wasn't just because I was young and dumb.) I loved seeing the ferry scene, tripods and the Red Weed return from the novel after being omitted from the first film. The design of the aliens still isn't all that but can't get too picky. And yes the whole his son survives thing is something I had no qualms with this time. It fits the source material and the Tom's character's emotional journey.

From a 6 to a 7/10.

I had some very high hopes for this one after loving the first instalment. But now already McQuarrie's presence is sorely missed. It starts of sort of trying to add a romantic subplot and throughout most the film we get a little girl to tag along as well. Not to mention how fucking poorly the bad guys are presented, never thought I'd prefer Jai Courtney, the main bad guys barely in it and without Herzog's presence and backstory and the righthand man being quite unthreatening. I feel like they completely overhauled the character from the first film and I was sorely disappointed by the film. Tom still gets to run a lot and break some bones and he is the most muscular he has ever been but it just misses a whole lotta somethings that the first one did bring to the table.

5/10.
