Well after several days of experimenting, the planets have aligned and here's my first killcount:

Thanks H83tr3d and Curci, I watched some tutorials for imovie on youtube, that helped a lot. I'm mostly happy with it, but for some reason the font on the numbers isn't consistent and I still have to work out how to do arrows on the still frames.

How do you screen record on Imovie?

I used the dvd ripper Rutledal recommended (Magic dvd for mac), converted the movie into an MP4 and imported that into imovie.

Does iMovie have a screen cap function? I usually use VLC Media Player's screen cap function to take screen grabs, because WMM's screen cap function always ends up rendering the colours slightly faded/lighter and it looks a bit off. Then just open it in Paint, or the Mac equivalent of Paint (iPaint?) and crudely draw an arrow on the picture and save it.

Yes, imovie does have a screen cap function that seems to work quite well, I don't know if there's a paint function on the mac, but I'm sure there is. I'l have to do some research.
